"What Is The Cause For The Emotionally Unstable Borderline Personality Disorder?"

By Michael Weisz

Have you ever asked yourself what may be the reasons behind the Emotionally Unstable Borderline Personality Disorder?

There are three main causes for the emotional instability in BPD.

The first one is assumed to be comprised by a mild inherited physical deficiency of emotion regulation. Still, scientific studies are not clear about the question if this deficiency is really inherited or comes as a consequence of borderline personality. Future studies will have to clarify this dilemma.

The second cause is represented by the absence or learned weak emotion management abilities. These abilities are mainly learned and they are comprised by mental strategies aimed to adjust the interpretation of events we face in such a way that they become less painful emotionally, and strategies to adjust the way one sees reality to be interpreted in more realistic and logical ways.

The third cause of emotionally unstable borderline personality disorder is represented by specific patterns of thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes triggered by present life events and situations.

But the main aspect of these cognitions is that they stem from painful and invalidating experiences in the child-parent relationship from childhood.

Once formed these thinking patterns become somewhat independent and get activated every time a similar stimuli or situation is detected to the one that originally led to their existence.

What this also means is that these patterns can be changed and replaced with new healthy and adaptive ones through the same process the original unhelpful ones were acquired. And that process is called learning.

So what can one do to come in control of his/her emotionally unstable borderline personality disorder?

One way to do that is to reinterpret your painful early life experiences. See, our brain is constantly searching for the sense and meaning of things that happen to us, and the same process went on in your subconscious mind when you were abused, deprecated, bullied, or disrespected by significant persons when you were a child, drawing negative and deprecating conclusions about yourself. And there are specific techniques and strategies to reverse that process.

Further on, you will need to not just think in positive terms about yourself, but to also act and behave toward yourself and others in such ways that they will turn into positive reinforcements for your newfound healthy and adaptive beliefs.
